Although believed to be one of the oldest english
gundog breeds its ancestry is uncertain. it is believed that it
comes from many cross matings to dogs such as the now extinct Tweed
water dog, lesser newfoundland and the still remainding breeds such
as poodle, barbett and irish water spaniel.
It was first exhibited in the mid 1800's and at that time very
popular on the large estates around the country. Unfortunately over
the years there popularity declined and other breeds such as the
golden retriever and labrador took over.

The curly today is an active, fun
loving dog who is both intelligent and loyal and has a great love for the
water. It has a distinctive tight curly coat. They can be slow to
mature . The males reach a size of 27 " and a female slightly smaller at 25".
They come in two colours , the black and the liver. the coat is easy to
maintain, no daily brushing is needed [ although combing does help during a
moult] Damp the coat down with water twice a week and massage it in with the
fingers and then pat it flat and this should keep your dogs coat in great
condition. They do moult but not often, usually once or twice a year .
Training of the curly is a must !
they are powerful dogs and if left to there own devices can become destructive.
They train easily especially if its made into a game as they can become bored.
