The Spinone is an ancient breed
from northern Italy, where it is a valued as a Gundog. In its own country of
origin it is a valued worker and is able to cover large areas with its fast
trotting gait and its harsh coat and thick skin , and large feet allow him to
work in marshy ground without problems. Spinone are keen water dogs, although it
can take a while for some to realise this!!
Although there are records of a
few spinoni being brought to this country in the 50’s the main spinone influence
in Britain came in the 80’s with the arrival of four imports under the odivane
affix, since then the breed has gained in popularity.
The spinone is a large dog with
males reaching 27” and weighing around 40 kgs and sometimes more. Bitches are
smaller by a few inches.
The spinone has a sweet gentle
nature and they adore people which makes then great family dogs, they have an
almost human expression and character unique to the breed, BUT
Before falling for the sweet
puppy meet as many adults as possible to see the true spinone. Along with all
the good points, and they have many, also come the bad points

Is a Spinone for you???
Before falling for the charm of a spinone puppy, ask yourselves
Are you the right owner for a spinone --- Not everyone is !!
Do you and your family have a sense of humour ?
You will need one --spinoni are great characters and there is never a dull
moment. They adore people , they think they are people !
Are you house proud?
Spinoni grow quickly and have large feet, which they never wipe after a
lovely walk in the fields.
Can you cope with wet beards and flying drool ?
A popular word to spinone owners is "DUCK" they love nothing more than to
have a drink of water and then share it with you ! I'm sure they aim !
Can you cope with a thief in the house ?
If the Sunday roast [cooked or frozen] is left out and within reach you
could be eating vegetarian that day.
REMEMBER **** All puppies are capable of bringing lots of love and
happiness to the right families BUT they can also bring mass destruction
of your once beautiful garden and furniture
ARE YOU SURE YOUR READY
Taking on a spinone puppy is much the same as a pup from any breed
NEVER buy on impulse, research the breed and ask to view adult dogs before
you make that final decision. Its a long term commitment.
Some of the questions asked by
prospective new owners are—
1------ what colour are they?
They come as
white, white and orange, orange roan, brown roan and brown and white
2-----are they
good family dogs?
Yes, if the groundwork is put
in, they a sweet natured, love everyone but if not trained can take over the
house [ as with any breed]
3--- do they get
on with cats and other pets?
Yes, again the
early training
4----are they easy
to train?
Spinoni are very intelligent
dogs with a mind of their own, they will pick thing s up very easily but can
also be very stubborn and if they want a day off from training there nothing you
can do. He’s not a dogto shout at , he’ll ignore you, gentle firm tones work
much better.
5---- boy or
girl??
When I am asked this its so
difficult, I have 3 boys and 5 girls and apart from the size I don’t see much
difference, its entirely up to individual character of the dog.
